Video Game Designer Institutes 2022

The Leatherstocking Writing Project Game Designer Institutes are an effort to bring STEAM engineering skills to kids in Otsego and Delaware counties. The camps were first piloted in 2019 for students in grades 4 through 8 and grades 2-12 in 2020. We are excited to return for 2022 with two week-long game design institutes: One for middle school students and the other for high school students. The institutes will be held on the campus of SUNY Oneonta and we plan to host fun, engaging, and interactive learning activities that will involve face-to-face, collaborative, and online activities where kids will be able to share, play-test, and present their produced video games. Our video game designers will develop game design skills using Construct 3, which has the capabilities for young people to design, produce, and share professional quality games to the world. Registration for the institutes are available on a “pay what you can” design. This means that any and all kids can register for our institutes regardless of income or ability to pay. We look forward to working with all the brilliant young video game designers this summer.

Video Game Designer Institute—Middle School
July 25, 2022 - July 29, 2020 | For kids entering grades 6-8

Video Game Designer Institute—High School
August 1, 2022 - August 5, 2022 | For kids entering grades 9-12

This will be a week long video game design institute where kids will plan, design, program a self-produced video game. Game designers will work with design elements, systems thinking, storytelling, and playtesting that is modeled on production methods of video game design. No prior experience in coding is needed as we will use Construct 3 that models the UI of game design engines like Unreal or Infinity, but with point and click logic design rather than using code like C#. At the end of the week, game designers will present their games to peers in a game design conference that is similar to game conferences like E3.
