When Jadyn Hysack learned about SUNY Oneonta’s pre-chiropractic program, she knew she wanted to take a crack at it. Having earned a bachelor’s in biology after a busy four years packed with classes, clubs and an internship, she is now continuing her spinal health studies at Northeast College of Health Sciences in Seneca Falls.
Why SUNY Oneonta?
One of the main reasons I chose SUNY Oneonta was its unique pre-chiropractic track, which wasn’t available at other schools I considered. The beautiful campus and the welcoming sense of home I felt during my visit solidified my decision.
My Activities
During my time at Oneonta, I joined several clubs, including the biology club, the pre- health club, and the SUNY Oneonta Frisbee Association. These clubs significantly contributed to my success as a student. I highly encourage new and current students to join a club, whether academic, sports, or hobby-oriented. They offer fantastic opportunities to meet people and take a break from the stresses of college life.
One of the best decisions I made during my four years was joining the frisbee club. It allowed me to travel to different schools for competitions, participate in a tournament in Myrtle Beach over spring break, and make some of my best friends.
Best Experiences
In my final year, I interned at Etzl Chiropractic in Oneonta, which exceeded all my expectations. The doctors were incredibly welcoming, and the patients graciously allowed me to observe and learn. This experience taught me how to interact with patients, build and maintain relationships, and understand the different techniques used by various doctors. It also encouraged me to ask questions whenever I had them.
Favorite professors?
Among the many outstanding faculty members at SUNY Oneonta, Dr. Benjamin Wilhelm was particularly influential. He was always willing to help his students and went out of his way to answer any questions.
About My Major
My passion for the sciences in high school led me to major in biology, as I believed it would best prepare me for chiropractic school. The program's structure was particularly appealing, with a clear outline of required and suggested courses, as well as a recommended timeline. This guidance was invaluable in preparing me for my next chapter at Northeast College of Health Sciences. It was through this program that I first connected with the admissions counselor and my now advisor at Northeast.
To anyone considering SUNY Oneonta for biology, I advise finding activities that give your mind and body a break from studying. Biology can be overwhelming, but it’s not impossible. Taking time for yourself is crucial to avoid burnout.
