What is Academic Coaching?
Academic coaching facilitates and supports a tutee’s learning and academic success through the establishment of a safe environment where a student can enhance their study and/or writing skills and become an independent, confident, and self-aware learner.
Some common goals for academic coaching
Academic coaching is unique to everyone who uses the service because it's based on the student's needs and goals. Some common issues we work on with students are as follows:
- Writing skills
- Comprehension strategies
- Note-taking skills
- Test taking strategies
- Test anxiety management
- Retrieval practice
- Time management
Who can sign up for Academic Coaching?
Any currently enrolled student may request an academic coach. When students are scheduled for an appointment, they are permitted up to 11 meetings per semester with an academic coach.
How are appointments made?
When a student requests an academic coach, we determine whether a coach is available during times when the student is also available. If no coach is available, the student will remain on the waiting list until an acceptable spot opens. We cannot guarantee availability, but we do our best to try to get everyone scheduled who is seeking coaching.
When an appointment for coaching is made, that will be the standing appointment for that student for up to 11 weeks.
Requests are entered on our Tracktion website. (Please be certain to use a laptop or desktop, as we do not have a mobile app. And be sure to leave as many times OPEN in your schedule as possible.)
Attendance policy
While all services through the SLC are voluntary on the part of the student, once a student has an appointment made (for any SLC service), attendance is expected. All services require a 24-hour cancellation. Failure to show up for a scheduled appointment or failure to cancel 24 hours prior is considered a "no show." When a student has two no-shows, they lose that service for the remainder of the semester.
