Student Life

From the Office of Student Activities and Leadership

This fall semester we were busy hosting 1198 engagement activities, a quarter of which granted leadership credit to enhance student learning outside of the classroom.

For the spring semester, we plan to continue most campus-wide programs as virtual or hybrid (with some component in person) Mondays through Thursdays and mostly hybrid or strictly in-person, hands-on activities in small groups on weekends. There will also be in-person activities regularly in the residence halls for those on campus. We will schedule adequate time in between events to permit students to arrive and depart safely. By staggering events like this and spreading them out we will be able to involve students meaningfully and fulfill our mission to help student “grow intellectually, thrive socially, and live purposefully.”

The Activities Council (A/C) will provide anchor programming six nights a week including virtual, in-person, and hybrid events and activities broadly available to our student population including students living on campus, students living locally off-campus, and students living at a distance. Activities will begin January 21 when students first move to Oneonta and will run through May 14. In total, there are some 135 planned A/C events and activities, some of which are offered in multiple venues to allow for reduced density. 24 events will be virtual only, 64 will be hybrid events giving students ability to participate in-person or online, and 47 will be in-person only (all the latter will be on weekends). There are approximately 10 A/C activities each week. You will see these events posted our engagement site Campus Connection or on the companion app CORQ by the first week of January.

In response to the Wellness Days that have been added to the spring college calendar, we will host back-to-back programs encouraging students to take a break from the studies and spend a full day unplugging and relaxing.

We have over 150 student led clubs and organizations who are working hard to engage all students. Students will have a chance to meet them during the club eXpo on 1/27/2021. They will have meetings and events virtually, safely in-person, and every combination adhering to CDC NYS COVID-19 capacity and safely delivered.

Greek Life: Fraternities and Sororities are participating in virtual new member education this semester. There are 13 fraternities and 9 sororities at SUNY Oneonta and this semester there are 760 students involved. Students are staying involved by participating virtually in chapter meetings and social and wellness activities online. The Inter-Greek Council, the Multicultural Greek Council and the Order of Omega have been meeting online as well. The Office of Greek Life hosts Motivational Monday, Wellness Wednesday, and Fun Friday programs to keep members engaged. Learn more about Greek Life

The GSRC (Gender Sexuality Resources Center) provides programming, education, and support for the campus community around gender and sexuality issues and experiences. Last year, we had 70 events in person and online. The GSRC works with offices/departments across campus on different initiatives, including new Marsha P. Johnson Community Housing, the annual PRISM Conference, Lavender Graduation, and more. This spring, they will run as an in-person space if allowed, as well as a virtual space, but services will remain intact. Programming in the spring will be robust, including collaborations with The Counseling Center, Center for Multicultural Experiences, and various student organizations and academic departments. Some programming to look forward to includes the continuation of Art of Relaxation, Safe Space Training, and celebrations around Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and LGBTQIA+ Pride. Details on all their services and upcoming events can be found on the GSRC webpage.

Family members can also learn more about activities and events by signing up for the weekly activities email broadcast.
