Mathematics

SUNY Oneonta Mathematics majors study the theoretical and practical applications of mathematics. Courses in the history of math are also offered.

Related majors in Statistics and Computer Science are available, along with minors in Statistics, Computer Science and Computer Information Technology, and a 3-2 engineering program.

Seminars and independent study projects will allow you to explore more advanced topics and to work with faculty members in special areas of interest. Student teams regularly pit their skills against those of students at other colleges and universities in the prestigious Putnam mathematics competition.

Math majors also have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on joint research projects, and some have co-authored papers or presented their work on campus and at regional meetings of the Mathematical Association of America.

The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics student club, Sanford Society, provides academic and social activities.

Profiles

Kimmy Cushman Profile
The course of Yale University Ph.D. student and graduate researcher Kimmy Cushman’s life changed dramatically on an autumn day inside SUNY Oneonta’s Science Discovery Center.
Taylor Williams
I would love to be an algebra teacher in a high school. I love math! Growing up, I never really had a great math teacher, and I always wanted to be that teacher who actually went out of their way to help their kids rather than letting them figure it out on their own, because that's what I had to do. I want to help other people succeed.

My top experience is seeing how awesome the professors are. You can easily make a connection with them, and they learned my first name so fast! And also all the events going on up at Hunt Union. There’s so many events going on there, and I’ve loved every single one so far.
